Channel Relay Swim
Nineteen age group swimmers are now training for a Channel relay attempt in July. On Saturday 29th March they will be doing a mock Channel Swim at Clissold Leisure Centre, swimming 1,482 lengths over approximately twelve hours in teams of six, joined by experienced Channel Swimmers.

The swimmers are seeking sponsorship for this swim and are aiming to raise at least £2K towards the £10Kcost of the Channel project. They are donating 10% of the money raised  from the mock swim to a local charity, Hackney Family Back-up. We are asking for support from across the club, either by sponsoring swimmers for the mock swim, by making a donation directly to the project or by identifying possible corporate or other sponsors. To date, a total of £5K has been raised.

If you would like to make a donation to the project or can help with fundraising or in any other way, please contact Anna Hart on mail@clissoldswimmingclub.org.uk

Club AGM

The club's AGM will be on Monday 31st March at 6.30 pm at Clissold Leisure Centre (see attached flyer). All members and parents are invited to attend. This is an opportunity to find out more about your club.

The AGM will include a report from the Chair on the main events of the past year and also presentation of the accounts for y/e 31st December 2007, which need to be approved by the membership at the AGM.

The club is entirely managed by volunteers. There are 8 officers of the club, who are elected for a 1 year post at the AGM. These are:

  • Chair
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Membership Secretary (age-group)
  • Competition Secretary (age-group)
  • Welfare Officer
  • Publicity Officer
  • Fundraising Officer

Job descriptions for these posts will shortly be posted on the club website. Please do look at them and consider standing for one of these posts. If you would like to stand, please contact Ayesha Solomon on carsol@tiscali.co.uk

In addition to these elected officers, there are also a number of other jobs, as follows:

  • Membership Secretary (Masters swimmers)
  • Competition Secretary (Masters swimmers)
  • Water polo co-ordinator
  • Diving co-ordinator
  • Channel Swim/ Open water co-ordinator
  • Social Secretary
  • Newsletter Editor
  • Website Manager
  • Press Officer
  • SwimShop Manager

These are not elected posts, but volunteers will be sought at the AGM. Those taking on these non-elected posts do not have to join the committee, but are invited and encouraged to do so.

We particularly need volunteers to take on the jobs of Treasurer, Fundraising Officer, Competition Secretary (age-group), Competition Secretary (Masters swimmers) and Water polo co-ordinator.

Which of these jobs could you do?

Please be aware that we are only able to keep fees as low as we do, because almost all the work of running the club is done by volunteers.

Masters Swimming

Monthly fees will be increased from 1st April 2008 to £36 per month for those attending a maximum of 2 coached sessions per week or £72 per month for those who wish to attend any coached Masters session (currently 5 sessions per week). These fees are to be paid by standing order. We will no longer be accepting cash or cheque monthly payments. However, if you cannot commit to swimming on a regular basis, and would prefer to pay on a sessional basis, you can continue to pay @ £7 per session, by buying a book of vouchers in advance. From 1st April, cash payments for sessions will no longer be accepted.

We will also be introducing a concessionary rate of £4 per voucher for those paying by voucher, or 50% of the full rate for those paying by standing order.

If you have any queries about Masters fees, please contact Sarah Cull on mail@clissoldswimmingclub.org.uk

Water Polo fees
Monthly fees for water polo players have been set at £10 per month since January 2008 and there will be no increase for the time being. These can either be paid by standing order or termly in advance, by cheque or in cash. If you have not yet set up a standing order to pay your water polo fees, then please consider doing this when you contact your bank to increase your monthly fees (starting from May). If you prefer to pay water polo fees on a termly basis and have not yet paid for this term, then please make sure you do so before the end of March.

Age group swimmer fee increases

Monthly club fees for age group swimmers have not been increased since April 2006. However, over the last 2 years, the number and length of sessions for most groups of swimmers has increased. This means that our pool hire costs have gone up and we are now employing more coaches. Almost all of our income comes from membership fees. Therefore, in order to pay our increased costs, we now have to increase the level of monthly club fees. Even allowing for a fee increase, we are still projecing a shortfall of over £10,000 in 2008, which will have to be met through fundraising.

Fees for age group swimmers will be increased to £35 per month from 1st May 2008. These fees must be paid by standing order. Collecting fees in cash/ cheque is hugely time consuming. Moreover, despite our best efforts, every year members who have not been paying by standing order leave the club with fees in arrears, meaning that we end up losing money. At the end of 2007, there was over £1,500 of fee arrears outstanding, much of which will not now be recovered. We are determined not to let this situation continue.

Please contact your bank now in order to increase your standing order from your May payment, or to set up a standing order from May, if you are not already paying by this method. A standing order form is attached. If you absolutely cannot pay by standing order, then please discuss this with the Membership Secretary.

Fees for secondary school age swimmers eligible for subsidised places will increase to £17.50 per month (i.e. 50% of full fees), while those for primary school age children are pegged at £2 per month, for as long as the current grant funding lasts. (Details on attached chart).

Club fees still represent very good value for money. £35 per month works out at £9.50 per week over 44 weeks, i.e. less than £5 per session for those attending an average of 2 sessions per week and much less than this for those attending 3 or more sessions per week.

Speedo swimwear controversy at swimming champs

"The Speedo swimsuit partly developed at Otago University is causing controversy at the European swimming championships.

World records continue to fall in the build-up to the Beijing Olympics by swimmers wearing the Speedo LZR Racer suit.

French swimming officials want a high level of debate over the suits, and are questioning whether they are providing buoyancy."
