New Coach appointed to boost National Squad

" British Water Polo has appointed Head Coach Jerome Read as they continue to build towards London 2012. Former national water polo player Read has a strong background in the sport and took bronze in the Commonwealth Tournament in Manchester in 2002. Last year he was head coach of the junior squad and led them to victory at the European Qualification Tournament.

Read takes charge of the men's team and will develop the squad in their pursuit of excellence.

'I believe that I have a fantastic opportunity to take the men's team to where it belongs,' he said. 'With my background in sports science and my knowledge of the sport I know I can take this team forward.

'The amount of support that we have for the sport in terms of funding and sports science has improved massively in the past couple of years and we know that we need to maximise this opportunity. I know that with the potential in the squad and the support we are receiving we can be highly competitive at the London 2012 Olympics.'"

Water polo

During the course of this term , we have been running taster water polo sessions from 10.00 - 11.00 am on Sunday mornings at Ironmonger Row. These sessions are open to children and young people in Y5 - Y11 and are free of charge. They are not restricted to club members. The first 4 sessions have already taken place.

There will be 2 further sessions on Sundays 15 and 29 July. There will then be 4 further sessions next term on Sundays 9 and 23 September and on Sundays 7 and 21 October. If you haven't yet tried water polo, why not come along to one of these sessions? And why not invite some of your friends?

If any of our older female water polo players are interested, British Water Polo is hosting an Open Day, with the aim of recruiting more young women into the sport in the run up to the 2012 Olympics. The Open Day will be held in Walsall on Saturday 21 July. It is intended for female swimmers aged 16 - 22. If you are interested, please contact sam.littledyke@swimming.org for more details.

London Poly Water Polo does it again

For our partner club the London Poly Water Polo team the weekend in Nottingham at the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) championships was a big success. London University Mens team took the gold medal for the 3rd successive year. The girls finished 4th, just missing out on the bronze medal. Much praise to Gary for his hard work at developing the student mens team. They didn’t lose a single game all season!!

    water polo roundup December 2006

    Water polo

The mixed U16 water polo team played in the first tournament of the 2006/2007 winter League on Sunday 05 November. They played four matches, each of 10 minutes, against some very tough opposition. The first match was against Beckenham (lost 9 -0 ), the second against Worthing (lost 16 -0 ), the third against Croydon Amphibians ( lost 16 – 0) and the fourth against Enfield SC (lost 2 -1). This was certainly a steep learning curve for the team, who were playing in their first tournament at this level.

Water polo training sessions are open to all club members in E1 and above who are aged 9+. Squad B trains at Iron-monger Row on alternate Sunday mornings from 10.00 - 11.00 am, while Squad A trains at Ironmonger Row on alternate Sunday mornings from 10.30 -12.00 am and at Highbury Grove on Tuesday evenings from 7.00 - 8.30 pm. Please ask Andy which session to come to initially. You will then be assessed and allocated to a squad.
