Water Polo with Clissold Swimming Club
Over many years Clissold Swimming Club has used water polo for exercise and for fun and to build a strong team spirit. Clissold Swimming Club introduced water polo formally into its training programme in February 2006 and this has proved to be very popular. The water polo players have now started to play in competitive games.
Working with London Poly Water Polo Club Clissold has established regular water-polo training and from this has grown competitive teams. Clissold Swimming Club is working to promote water polo in north east London.
Working with London Poly Clissold SC has the ambition to become north east London's premier mini-polo and youth water polo club. Call us to see if you can join us and get in the game.
The club has recently been awarded a grant from the GLA to host three water polo taster sessions as part of the GLA’s London Summer of Sport. The first of these sessions took place on Sunday 10th September and the next two will be held on Sunday 24th September and on Sunday 8th October from 10.00 – 12.00 am at Ironmonger Row Baths. These taster sessions will be free of charge to any young people aged 8 – 18 who are competent swimmers and would like to come along and try out water polo. We hope to see more participants at the next sessions. Here are the rules.
Clissold Swimming Club is Hackney’s competitive swimming club and offers a full training programme for swimmers of all abilities age 5 – 18. For further details, please ring 07891 880781 or visit our website at www.clissoldswimmingclub.org.uk.

British Water Polo has appointed Head Coach Jerome Read as they continue to build towards London 2012. Former national water polo player Read has a strong background in the sport and took bronze in the Commonwealth Tournament in Manchester in 2002. Last year he was head coach of the junior squad and led them to victory at the European Qualification Tournament.
Read takes charge of the men's team and will develop the squad in their pursuit of excellence.
'I believe that I have a fantastic opportunity to take the men's team to where it belongs,' he said. 'With my background in sports science and my knowledge of the sport I know I can take this team forward.
'The amount of support that we have for the sport in terms of funding and sports science has improved massively in the past couple of years and we know that we need to maximise this opportunity. I know that with the potential in the squad and the support we are receiving we can be highly competitive at the London 2012 Olympics.'"

For our partner club the London Poly Water Polo team the weekend in Nottingham at the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) championships was a big success. London University Mens team took the gold medal for the 3rd successive year. The girls finished 4th, just missing out on the bronze medal. Much praise to Gary for his hard work at developing the student mens team. They didn’t lose a single game all season!!

Water polo
The mixed U16 water polo team played in the first tournament of the 2006/2007 winter League on Sunday 05 November. They played four matches, each of 10 minutes, against some very tough opposition. The first match was against Beckenham (lost 9 -0 ), the second against Worthing (lost 16 -0 ), the third against Croydon Amphibians ( lost 16 – 0) and the fourth against Enfield SC (lost 2 -1). This was certainly a steep learning curve for the team, who were playing in their first tournament at this level.
Water polo training sessions are open to all club members in E1 and above who are aged 9+. Squad B trains at Iron-monger Row on alternate Sunday mornings from 10.00 - 11.00 am, while Squad A trains at Ironmonger Row on alternate Sunday mornings from 10.30 -12.00 am and at Highbury Grove on Tuesday evenings from 7.00 - 8.30 pm. Please ask Andy which session to come to initially. You will then be assessed and allocated to a squad.

"NWPL initiative to combat rough and unacceptable play in water-polo"
During the opening weekend of the Division One season, the competing clubs were informed of a NWPL initiative to combat rough and other unacceptable play. This initiative is in response to the current worldwide belief that the sport is becoming increasingly rough, leading to a reduction in skill levels, increased injuries and lack of attraction for potential competitors (particularly young people).

Cheltenham water polo's 12-8 win over Rotherham Metro earned them the National Championship title in Manchester. It was the first time they had won the sport's equivalent of the FA Cup since 1968. They had previously won it in 1955, 1958, 1959 and 1962, and were losing finalists eight times, the last in 1977.
Coach Louis Eperjesi said their triumph was a vindication of the years they had spent bringing on young players.
Apart from goalkeeper David Berry, 40, David Edwards, 44, and Tony Wass, 31, and all the players were under 30. They had been boosted by the arrivals of Todd Wolff from Canada and Max Gerasamov from Russia.
Gerasamov, a student at Birmingham University, learned his game with Moscow Dynamo. Wolff is an engineer working in Stonehouse. Edwards played for Leamington, Maindee and Sutton & Cheam before joining Cheltenham. [Western Counties ASA]
